Freewrite to Unlock Creativity and Ditch Writer’s Block

Bid Writer’s Block Farewell

Freewriting is a powerful way to tap into creativity and imagination while clearing your mind. It’s like free therapy that strengthens your skills and unlocks new ideas.

A great exercise all on its own, a freewrite session can serve as a warmup for a ton of other creative processes, too.

A daily writing practice can dramatically improve mental clarity, focus, and help open your days up to more effortless creativity.

Freewriting is an amazing tool because, whether we’re feeling particularly creative or not, our minds have a way of putting one word after another until we end up with something we couldn’t have predicted but that’s usually always enlightening or inspiring.

Every writer will have periods when they can’t think of a thing to put to paper. But writer’s block doesn’t have to signal the end of the creative process.

Freewriting can help dismantle that creative block so you can get back to your magic.

Because there are no goals other than to write anything in constant flow for a set period, freewriting is a beneficial add-on to every writer’s routine.

Below is a list of resources, rituals, and tricks for turning your writer’s block into a freewriting success story!

7 Tools & Tips for Freewriting Success

Old Inspiration

For some, freewriting can be a little intimidating because it doesn’t rely on any guidelines or rules. When I’m feeling hesitant at the start, I’ll pull on a memory. Any memory works.

Use it to fuel your first few sentences and let your creativity take you from there.

Preset Boundaries

This free timer has become one of my go-to’s for work, blogging, and freewriting. You’ll get a 25-minute block of uninterrupted time to focus and get stuff done.

Enjoy five or ten-minute breaks to recharge before hitting your next block.

Infused Creativity

Creatives can be especially sensitive to their surroundings, so it makes perfect sense to set up a mindful space for your writing. Whether you prefer invigorating or calming, a pack of essential oils will have a major impact on how your freewriting flows.

Use in a diffuser, humidifier, or dab on your wrist.

A Curated Experience

If you need to ditch distraction, Ommwriter is, as they say, the “perfect place to think and write”. Their slogan is true; the nearly-free program consists of a simple text editor layout that includes font, music, and background options.

Create a theme all your own depending on your creative mood.

Everyday Practice

750 Words is a simple platform that inspires writers and creatives alike to commit to a daily freewriting practice. It’s free to start, and then just five dollars a month if you want to join their grassroots community of writers.

Write privately every day, export your data, and join monthly challenges.

Pen to Paper

Sometimes a clacking keyboard and glaring computer screen can hinder creativity more than help it. Tap into your freewriting vibe with a good ol’ fashioned journal that embraces your artistic side. You might be surprised at the magic that flows from pen to paper!

Energy Boost

Finally, head to the drawing, er, writing board with a hot (or iced) cup of energizing tea.

You’ll get enough of a boost that you can get your freewrite on without crashing afterward.

Freewriting is a practice that you can easily incorporate into your schedule, either before a bigger writing project or as a daily purge.

When done long-term, freewrite sessions can improve your writing skills, help you discover new desires, and help you avoid the creative blocks that hold you back from making serious progress!
